In Holmes County, the Kuhns are the first Amish family to expand commercial sheep production, using Dorset sheep who can breed year-round. When they purchased their flock in 1996, the Kuhns knew only four other sheep farmers who raised commercial-sized flocks.

In Lancaster County, Plain Sect farmers raised meat goats. On August 15, Amish farmers were requested to raise 10,000 goats a year from a hybrid of three breeds. The goats would then be imported to markets and butchers in New York, Boston, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

In Hanover, Michigan, Amish farmer Dave Yoder raises Berkshire, Hamshire, and Chester White pigs.
In Middlebury, Indiana, Amish farmers the Lehmans began their farm in 1988 with 60 sows and 16 cows, hand milking their cows until their community allowed milking machines in 1992. Their cattle then increased to 60 cows within the existing barns.
