  • In 1648, Mary Johnson was the first person recorded in Connecticut to be accursed of black magic, ironically just 40 years preceding the more infamous Salem trials.

  • In Wethersfield alone, there are nine accusations and three executions between 1648 and 1668, a twenty-year span. Mary Johnson's case, there was no trial or even recorded accusation, because she confessed immediately under pressure from Reverend Sam Stone.

  • Wethersfield's final executed sorceress, Katherine Harrison, was accused due to quickly becoming rich, since originally, she was a maid in Hartford. However, when her husband died, she inherited an estate worth one thousand pounds.
