  • The iguanas that initally inhabited the Galapagos Islands only ate vegitation on the island. These iguana quickly ran out of food and were struggling to survive.
  • Through reproduction gene mutations occured. These mutations quickly made an impact on the iguana populatiom
  • Iguanas with the favorable gene mutations had an increased likelihood to reproduce. This lead to their genes overtaking the populations majority.
  • The reason these iguanas had a increased likelihood of survival in their environment was due to their increased lung capacity and tail shape. These new phenotypes allowed the iguanas to eat algae growing off the rocks in the shallow waters.
  • Through reproduction the iguanas that had the traits that best suited their enviroment thrived. The original iguanas were soon bred out of the gene pool.
  • This genetic drift gave way to a new type of iguana to imerge. This iguana was named the "marine iguana" by none other than Charles Darwin. As more generations passed new mutations arose and began to overtake the population. The new trait these iguanas have developed is the ability to sneeze out salt they ingest while eating alaege from the ocean.
