- On 19 December, 1948, the Dutch launched operation Kraai (Crow) against Indonesia after they were no longer bound to the Renville Agreement. On that day, the Dutch bombed Yogyakarta. The main goal of the operation was to destroy Tentara Negara Indonesia. Within hours, the Dutch took over many locations.
- After hearing the attack, General Sudirman broadcasted a quick command to the guerilla army and requested the other leaders to evacuate and join the guerilla army. Sadly, the leaders refused and decided to stay in Yogyakarta. One of the leaders, which was Sukarno, planned "emergency government.
- We refuse to join your army General Sudirman! We'll stay in Yogyakarta!
- This is urgent! The Dutch is attacking again! You should evacuate and join the guerilla army!
- Sadly, President Sukarno, Vice- President Mohammad Hatta and prime minister Sultan Syahir were seized by the Dutch and exiled to Bangka. The three surrendered hoping that it would out rage international support. By 20 December, all remaining troops of Yogyakarta had been withdrawn. All parts of Indonesia except Aceh and a few parts of Sumatra fell under Dutch control. Meanwhile, Sudirman was suffering from tuberclosis. But, he still led the guerilla army.from his sickbed.
- We surrender.
- Surrender! For we are the Dutch and if you do not surrender you will be killed!
