- Night: Elie WieselOne day all foreign Jews were expelled from Sighet and Moshie the Beadle was a foreigner. Months went by and Moshie came back. He had explained what had happened to him while he was gone and how he was save by a miracle.

- Two ghettos were created in Sighet, one in the center of the town and another extended over alleyways. Ellie and his family were allowed to stay in their home considering one of the ghettos was on their street.
- Mind your business next time!
- Once Elie and his family finally arrived to Birkenau, they were separated by boy and girl. Elie didn't know this but it would be the last time he saw his mother and sister.
- Everyone got a number to be known by. There were no longer any names nor nicknames but rather numbers. These numbers were tattooed onto Jews bodies which would leave the reminder of their time of their concentration camp engraved in their mind.
- Elie accidentally saw an SS officer getting intimate with a gypsy and was punished in front of everyone. Jews would get publicly shamed when doing something the Germans didn't like. Ellie was whooped over 25 times in the back.
- Elie's foot began to swell due to the extreme cold which caused him great pain. He could no longer stand on it so he proceeded to go to the doctor where he found out he needed surgery.
