- In the republic and early statehood of Texas, after Texas became the "Republic of Texas" Texas wanted to be a state in the US but the US didn't want a slave state in the US, but in 1884, Texas was annexed as the 28th state of the US. In the Civil War, Texas joined the confederacy and fought against the union. The Confederacy surrendered to the Union in April 1885.
