When Doodle is born, his family is told he only has a few days left to live. This confuses our narrator and disappoints the family, and reader, immediately.
But he lived, and when Doodle learned to crawl, the two brothers would play outside. One day, the narrator showed Doodle his coffin and made him touch it, scarring Doodle for life.
The narrator worked constantly for several months, determined to eventually have a brother that could walk. When Doodle finally took his first steps, the narrator is proud, but only for himself.
The brothers would work hard every day after that. Each were determined to prove something. Doodle worked very hard to keep up with Brother, who would often push limits.
Before dinner one night, the family heard an awful noise. When they arrived outside they saw a fallen scarlet ibis. As the family returned back inside, Doodle remained with the Ibis, taking care to bury it.
Later on that same day, the boys got trapped in the storm. As they made their attempt back to the house, Doodle struggles to keep up. When the narrator turns back to him, he finds his brothers body in a pool of blood. Red as a Scarlet Ibis.
