  • Elle and Friends Journey: Learning About and Colonialization and Land Resurgence
  • But, the Indigenous Peoples did not give up.
  • The story begins at Chimo Elementary School in Ms. King's grade 8 class. Elle and her friend Ryan are talking at the end of class
  • Hey Elle, what are you watching on your phone?
  • An Indigenous Tik-Toker named Michelle. On her page she talks about colonialization and land resurgence
  • Oh cool! But what is colonialization and land resurgence?
  • Here, come watch with me and we can learn more!
  • Flash back to the early 1600's in Canada
  • Creator gave us land to cherish and protect
  • Indigenous Peoples lived in harmony with land. As a part of their culture, land is much more than just a physical place. Land holds a deep connection to every day cultural, spiritual, and social practices.
  • Welcome to the 1600's, where Tik-Tok didn't exist! I am going to teach you younglings about colonialization and land resurgence
  • What is colonialization and land resurgence?
  • We have lived sustainably on this land for thousands of years. Everything we take from the land, we give back as a sign of respect to Creator for giving us mother earth
  • However, the arrival of European settlers brought a different way of looking at the land, spirituality, and culture. The settlers only saw the land as a resource to be used for profit.
  • Once the settlers arrived, it led to the destruction of our scared land, as settlers cut down forests, polluted rivers and waterways, as well as hunted animals to extinction. They took away are cultural practices, our land, and who were are. This is colonialism.
  • We were so upset. Creator gave us land to protect and cherish. All the settlers care about is money
  • Settler colonialism works in and through the taking of our land. Ever since, we have been trying to re-claim not only our territories, but the knowledge and power that lies within them. This is land resurgence.
  • Land resurgence is especially important in your generation
  • What! Why, you guys have your land back!
  • Land resurgence is much more than just taking land back. Land resurgence is about asserting sovereignty over our traditional lands, reconnecting to homelands, language, spirituality, and leadership
  • Oh wow. I never knew about the importance and meaning of land
  • In your generation, there is many Indigenous led movements that work to take scared land back from governments that uphold settler colonialism. These movements have led to the creation of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA'S)
  • This is so cool. I want to be an ally and practice land resurgence!!
  • What we learned was so cool! I am going to go onto Michelle's Tik Tok page to see more about what I can do to be an ally.
  • Mom and Dad! I am going to be an Indigenous ally and educate others about colonialization and the importance of land resurgence.
  • As a teen, Elle began to care for the land, just as she had learned of the importance of cherishing mother earth.
  • She also started going to rally's to stop governments and business from taking and destroying Indigenous land
  • Today's Topic: Colonialization and Indigenous Resurgence
  • By the time she was an adult, she became an elementary school teacher to educate her students about colonialization and the importance of land resurgence
  • The End
