  • Louis Laurent Marie Clerc was born in Decemeber 26, 1785, when Clerc was about one years old he fell from his high chair into the kitchen fireplace. His cheek was severly burned and later they found out that he lost his sense of hearing smell.
  • First School In America
  • When Clerc was 12 years old his uncle-godfather enrolled him into an instituition that was the first public school for the deaf in the world. The assitant tacher, Abbe Margaron treated him bad for not being able to pronounce words and that is when Clerc thought signing was the best way to learn to communicate.
  • Clerc's Teaching Years
  • In 1805, just eight years later Clerc got chosen to become a tutor on trial. The following year he was hired as a teacher at the school in Paris, Gallaudet saw how Clerc was demonstrating his teaching methods and lectures and decided to bring him to America.
  • Clerc's Influence to America
  • Laurent Clerc has brought many new ways to communicate throught the world using sign for the deaf to communicate. :)
  • Gallaudet and Clerc made a school for the deaf together the first public deaf school in America, Gallaudet was the principal and Clerc was the head teacher. He taught all ages and deaf and hearing
  • Clerc has been teaching for 50 years he retired in 1858 when he was 73 years old. Even though he retired he continued his advocacy for deaf education . He was the guest of honor at the inauguration of the National Deaf-Mute College, now Gallaudet University.
  • Hartford students and teachers widely spread Clerc's teachings in his original and their modified signs it evolved into American Sign Language used in education and assimilated into the personal lives of America's deaf population and it's culture. Clerc's influence brought ASL into the world and made it easier for deaf people to communicate.
