Don Pedro and his soldiers return from war and visit Leonato, the Governor of Messina. Claudio meets Hero and instantly falls in love with her. Beatrice and Benedick meet again.
To pass the time before the wedding, Don Pedro and the others decide to try to get Beatrice and Benedick to stop arguing and fall in love. It works.
Borachio enacts a scene at Hero's window in which Margaret, who appears to be Hero succumbs to the amorous attentions of a man other than Claudio. Claudio sees this and is enraged.
Claudio angrily denounces Hero during their wedding ceremony and storms off. The friar performing the ceremony comforts Hero, her father and other family members.
Hero’s family members decide to pretend that she died suddenly of shock and grief. The night watchmen overhear Borachio bragging about his crime and they are caught.
Claudio mourns for her and agrees to marry one of Hero's cousins. The cousin turns out to be a disguised and forgiving Hero. Beatrice and Benedick also get engaged.
