  • Today we are learning about how the cell theory came to be.
  • Robert Hooke coined the name of the cell and was the first to see a micro-organism under a microscope. He named them cells after the little rooms where monks lived.
  • In Scotland, Robert Brown discovered the nucleus of a cell, as well as winning the Copley Medal and writing a few books.
  • Matthias Schleiden co-founded the cell theory. He was a professor in Dorpat, Russia. Theodore Schwann also co-founded the cell theory. As well as discovering Pepsin and having Schwann cells named after him.
  • Rudolf Virchow used the theory that cells come from pre-existing cells to lay groundwork for cellular pathology. He also created the modern form of autopsey and proved the importance of cell theory.
  • As you can see, there were many contributions to the cell theory. All of them are important and different. Without every single one of them, we would not be where we are today.
