- bubble-gum cigarettesYou can buy a box of bubble-gum cigarettes for a dime at the bodega around the corner. Sometimes Maria and I walk there, our fingers laced together, a nickel in each of our pockets. The bubble gum is pink with the white paper wrapped around it. When you put it in your mouth and blow, a white puff comes out. You can really believe you're smoking. We talk with the bubble-gum cigarettesbetween our fingers. Hold them in the airlike the movie starts on TV. We let them danglefrom our mouths and look at eachotherthrough slitted eyesthen laugh at how grown-up we can behow beautiful.When my sister sees uspretending to smoke, she shakes her head.That's why Daddy died, she says.After thatme and Maria peel the paper off,thurn our cigarettes into regular bubble gum.After thatthe game is over.

- I chose "bubble gum cigarettes" because when my great grandma passed, there was always something that reminded me of her. Sometimes that reminder of her was one of her belongings, or maybe even just something she used to say. But every time I was reminded of her I got sad and just wanted to cry. Now when I think of her I like to try and stay happy because I know that is what she would want me to do. I think that since Jackie was reminded by her sister, Odella that Daddy died because of smoking she got very sad and didn't want to play with the bubble gum cigarettes anymore so she just decided to chew the gum. When my great grandma passed I was kind of like Jackie because anytime I was reminded of her I didn't want to play anymore, I just wanted to lay down and cry.
