- After Odysseus' men opened the bag of bad winds thinking it was gold, they were sent back to the island. The king believed their voyage was cursed by the gods and refused to help them anymore.
- The men came across an island where cannibals bombarded the ship with boulders. Odysseus's ship was the only one to survive. The men then sailed to the home of the goddess Circe, who is known to many as a witch.
- Eurylochus led a group of men to explore the island while Odysseus and others stay on the ship. The men exploring found the hall of Circe--Circe's house. Polites, one of Odysseus' most faithful men, said they should greet the goddess.
- As the men ate the food Circe provided, she turned them into hogs. Eurylochus ran to the ship to tell Odysseus and begs for them to leave. Instead, Odysseus rushed to save his men. On his way, he met the god Hermes, who gave him a plant to protect him from Circe's power.
- After Odysseus threatened to kill her, she turned the hogs back to men, but they were in a trance. After a year, Odysseus begs her to let them go. She says they must visit the land of the dead first.
