  • Romeo's Characteristics
  • Romeo is complaining to Friar Lawrence about being banished because he will not be able to see Juliet. He says flies are more worthy than he is. In this scene it shows how Romeo views Juliet as a goddess and loves her dearly. He talks about Juliet in a romantic way and this shows how Romeo is a gentleman.
  • ...they may seize on the white wonder of dear Juliets hand and steal immortal blessing from her lips. who even in pure and vestal modesty, still blush, as thinking their own kisses sin...
  • Mercutio's Characteristics
  • Mercutio is trying to "summon" Romeo by using Rosaline as a sort of bait. He is describing her, but it is in a little more of a crude manner. Mercutio doesn't romanticize women very much.
  • ...I conjure thee by Rosaline's bright eyes, by her high forehead and scarlet lip, by her fine foot, straight leg, and quivering thigh...
  • Romeo and Mercutio together
  • This scene highlights Mercutio's blunt nature as Romeo tends to shy away more to the subject. Mercutio immediately uses inappropriate words and even though Romeo does play along to the whole joke as any teenager would, he approaches it more gently.
  • That's as much as to say, such a case as yours constrains a man to bow in the hams.
  • Meaning "to curtsy"?
