  • We must team up, amd protect ourselves from the Spartans!

  • I know, but do not worry. We can establish our own alliance, then soon, Athens will be powerless!

  • We must stop fighting. Too many people are becoming sick and dying because of the plague. Sign a truce!
  • In 478 BC, the Athens and the other city states formed an anti- Persian alliance called the Delian League to protect themselves from Spartans. Because of the Delian League, the rest of the city-states were powerless against Athens.
  • The Second Peloponnesian War
  • We Surrender!!!
  • Sparta established it's own alliance called the Peloponnesian League. They formed because they were angry that the Athens were gaining so much power.
  • During the first Peloponnesian war, the Spartans declared war on Athens. Athens had a strong navy, and the Spartans had a strong army. The Spartans tried to weaken Athens economy, however, in 430 B.C, they began to suffer from typhoid fever. It soon became a plague and caused many deaths. Because of this, the war became unwinnable. Athens signed a truce to stop fighting because neither Sparta or Athens could overpower each other, but the truce did not last for very long.
  • When Athens signed the truce to stop fighting it only lasted 2 years instead of 50. They were fighting over the rich lands of Sicily. Athens made many mistakes, however, Spartan reinforcements attacked Athenians on land and sea and sank 200 of their ships. Then, Sparta weakened Athenians' agriculture and economic resources. Athens been completely destroyed by Sparta. The Spartans then allied with Persia and caused Athens to flee the city. The Athens had the choice to starve or surrender. Eventually, Athens surrendered to Sparta and the war was finally over.
