  • Jem and Scout find more presents in the knothole tree near the Radley home. They come to realize the presents are really meant for them and someone, possibly Boo Radley, has been looking out for them.
  • "Yes... I filled it up...Tree's dying. You plug em' with cement when they're sick.."
  • "Mr. Radley, ah-did you put cement in that hole in the tree down yonder?"
  • Jem cries in the porch as he realizes that Nathan Radley putting cement on the tree is a way of restraint for Boo Radley and his contact with the outside world. In this scene, Jem begins to see the darkness the world has to offer. Once again, the theme that things are not always as they seem is displayed.
  • Jem begins to have a character change as his thoughts start to mature. He starts to realize Boo Radley is actually a good man and that returning the blanket put by him on Scout the day of the fire would only affect him more.
  • "...I swear he ain't ever hurt uus, he coulda cut my throat from ear to ear that night u but he tried to mend my pants instead..."
