The Socs beat him up real bad.
In the beginning of the book in chapter 1, Ponyboy gets jumped by the Socs. "It occurred to me then that they could kill me." (p.5) The Socs were taking advantage of the fact that he was alone and decided to beat him up.
I killed him...
Johnny's parents are abusive. "Johnny had it awful rough at home..." (p.4) Child abuse is made clear in this novel because of this statement.
Johnny is scared of the Socs because they beat him up really badly. "I remember Johnny- his face all cut up and bruised." (p.4) The Socs seem to have no mercy for the other gangs.
Johnny kills Bob. As Bob attempts to drown Ponyboy, Johnny acts in self-defense and stabs Bob. "I killed him . . . I killed that boy" (p.56)
Johnny dies. His and Bob's death wouldn't have occurred in the way they had if Johnny didn't belong to a gang.
Dally robs a store and pulls an unloaded gun on the police so they shoot him. Dally commits suicide by cop because of Johnny dying.
