  • 300 women applied for VMI but were denied because of their sex.
  • Only male students could attend VMI. It is discriminatory for male-only admissions so I decided to file a complaint. The U.S. justice department sued the state of Virginia afterwards
  • VMI believes that single-sex schools offers better benefits than other schools
  • Virginia argued that single-sex education provides benefits and women would destroy those benefits. Virginia said that allowing women would weaken it's "adversative" training system. They said it would be to difficult for women because of the harsh training.

  • Virginia offered to create a seperate women's military school (Virginia Women's Institute for Leadership).

  • The court said that although many women couldn't complete VMI's training, some could and that shouldn't exclude women just because a lot can't.
  • In a 7-1 decision, the supreme court ruled that VMI's admission was unconstitutional.
  • This strengthened the 14th amendment and in 1997, VMI opened it's doors to female cadets.
