Thomas Jefferson was looking to expand the US. In 1803 the US bought the Louisiana Territory. He bought it from the French for $15 million. With that the US size doubled and there were possibilities for westward expansion.

Lewis and Clark traveled 8,000 miles, and 123 miles in Kansas. They said that it was a beautiful and great place. They said that it was beautiful and that there was plenty of game and berries.

Zebulon Pike described Kansas as a desert. He looked over the land and thought that it was "worthless". He said that "the land was dry and sandy and it was a place where nothing grew".

Stephen Long traveled by steamboat. Stephen H. Long said that the land was unfit for people who depended on agriculture. He labeled the area, "The Great American Desert."
Jackson said that he thought the "savages" should move to the Kansas desert. He thought that the Americans should take the "savages" place and create a big city.
We should move the "savages" west and take their land.
The Indian removal act begun in 1830. The act forced the East American Indians to relocate to Kansas and other areas. The Americans forced the tribes off of their land and to move West.
