Hojo Masako was born in Japan, 1157. Her father was the leader of the Influential Hojo Clan of Izu Province, Hojo Tokimasa. As a result of Hojo's young parents, she was raised mainly by nursemaids and ladies-in-waiting.
Later Years (1205 - 1225)
Hojo Masako's role in the Battle of Uji came when Prince Mochihito's plan to overthrow the Taira Clan had failed, which later influenced the Minamoto Clan leader to find support in the Hojo Clan. This prompted the beginning of the Genpei War.
Death (1225)
The Genpei War is often described as the last struggle between the Taira and Minamoto Clans. By the year 1155, the whole Taira Clan had been wiped out, leaving Minamoto no Yoritomo as the undisputed leader of Japan. Hojo Masasko had stood by Yoritomo throughout it all.
In the year 1205, Hojo Masako's brother had succeeded as 'Shikken', whilst she found herself in a powerful position as a negotiator with the court.
Hojo Masako died at the age of 69 from a sudden illness, leaving her eldest son (Hojo Yasutoki) to succeed her.
