  • Back in 1876, Serbia gained independence from the Ottoman Empire, but many Serbians in Bosnia would remain under the Austro-Hungarians control. The Serbians, refusing to tolerate this, hatched a plan.
  • We have to do something!
  • The Serbian government found a terrorist organisation known as the Black Hand. They decided that assassinating a royal family member of Austro-Hungary would win back their independence.
  • In June 1914, an opportunity arose. The heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand, was visiting Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, to inspect troops despite many warnings. The assassination team assembled along the River Miljacka.
  • They had six men, six chances. Each of the men ready to kill as Franz’s car passed by. However, the first 2 watched as the car passed by, completely failing.
  • The third threw a bomb, only to have it detonate long after they had driven away! He even failed to execute his own escape plan. The remaining three failed to act as well.
  • However it doesn’t end there. One of the assassins saw an opportunity when he left for lunch. Coincidentally, Franz’s car was right in front of him! He took the chance and shot both Franz and his wife. The assassin was immediately arrested and soon a chain reaction would then lead to the first world war.
