I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and transferred to the Marine Corps, where I served as a fighter pilot from 1953–1956. I majored in physics at the University of California, Los Angeles, receiving bachelor’s and master’s degree. Later in 1968 I also flew on the 11 day flight of the Apollo 7.
While in the military I helped develop Mobil Army Surgical Hospitals and the Veteran's Administration Medical Research System. I also developed parts for the heart-lung machine, was one of the first doctors to perform coronary bypass surgery, and was a pioneer in the development of the artificial heart, and was the first to use an artificial heart pump.

I am an American heart surgeon famous for performing the first implantation of a total artificial heart. In addition to this I also helped to develop techniques to repair aortic aneurysms and to bypass arteriosclerotic blockages in the leg and neck. Lastly, I also devised a methoud to reduce transfused blood needed when using a heart-lung machine.

Howard Hughes Sr. 1869-1924
I made drill bits for the oil industry and made much of my money in Texas oil. While in the oil industry, I co-founded the Sharp-Hughes Tool Company. One of the drill bits I invented was called the Hughes-Sharp rotary drill bit and could penetrate medium to hard rock with 10 times the speed of any former drill bit.
