  • Goffman observed how our face to face interactions and how we represent ourselves to people are important in that we almost put up a front or act. In particular, The President for example, needs people to like he or she and for others to see us in a positive light in order to get votes. The election of Donald Trump in particular, seemed like it was a fight/reach for the public to like him and to distinguish what was a front and what was genuine.
  • We live in a world where there are signs all around us that mean and convey different things that could also be actions, or people. Symbols have a shared meaning in a certain culture that is understood by those members in society. For example, during or after the war, some people chose to get a tattoo (an everlasting symbol) in remembrance of those who died or fought for our country.
  • Charles Cooley developed the theory called looking-glass self where he argued that ones perception of oneself is based on how society views him or her. Here with gender, if society views this boy as tough or masculine then he himself will act or percieve himself as that to others.
