  • A very cold winter is coming and we can see that the wood frog is getting ready for it. Over time, wood frogs have learned to survive harsh winters. This is an example of evolution. Their genetic code allows them to withstand the cold and freeing temperatures.
  • It starts to prepare by storing large mounts of urine in it's blood. The frog starts to get cold so the outer and inner parts of it's body start to freeze. This is known as stimulus and response. To prevent dehydration, it starts to make glucose. This exhibits homeostasis.
  • Using the urine and the glucose, it creates homemade anti-freeze. If it weren't for the anti-freeze, the cells would crumble and die due to frostbite. Afterwards, the frog enters a state of suspended animation. The internal organs and metabolism start to stop. Everything eventually stops working.
  • Even though most of it's body is frozen. It will be able to survive until winter and the cold temperatures are over.
  • It has been an excruciating 8 months and the temperatures are starting to rise and the frog starts to defrost. The cells re-hydrate and it's blood begins to flow again!
  • The frog looks for food after 2 days to get its energy back (Metabolism). It also starts looking for a mate. This is an example of sexual reproduction. This adult frog, meaning it has gone through growth a development, now gets to enjoy the warm weather. The end!
