In the mountains of Greece, there lived the Oreades, a group of Nymphs, and the prettiest among them was a Nymph named Echo.
One day while Echo was helping Zeus, king of Olympus, distract his wife Hera to let him frolic with the nymphs.
Hey Zeus was looking for you at mount Olympus.
Oh, I have to go!
Hera discovered the nymph's deception and cursed her.
Forever, forever...
Because you tricked me, henceforth, you will always have the last word, never the first. Forever!
That is, until she saw Narcissus, a very beautiful man, walking through her neck of the woods. As it turns out, Narcissus was lost and couldn't find his way back to his friends. Echo tried helping him, but her speech impediment got in the way, causing him to get very angry and yell at Echo for not helping him.
This event caused Echo so much grief that she impromptuly died of a broken heart. her body and soul withered away until only a voice was left, the first ever Echo.
This deeply enraged Aphrodite, goddess of love, who sought out revenge on Narcissus for breaking not only Echo's heart, but dozens of other nymphs he'd rejected. She lead him to a pool of water and when Narcissus looked in, he was immediately in love with what he saw. What Narcissus saw in the pool was his own reflection, and he stayed there, admiring himself until he died, becoming the first Narcissus flower.
