Why did I buy that Indulgence?
Martin Luther was a German monk who lived in Wittenberg, Germany. He was born in Eisleben and spread the word of God throughout his country. However, he began to believe that the Church was corrupt, and started to share his opinion with the Community. His crucial role in the reformation caused the huge split in the Catholic Church, this split has shaped the world that we live in today.

Martin Luther believed that the Church was not following the traditional Catholic doctrine and sold indulgences for a price. The price of indulgences would slowly rise depending on how much of it was need for the new cathedral, which at the time was under construction. People would even spend their years earnings on indulgences.

Martin Luther could not take the corruption any longer and decided to write 95 theses, outlining the changes he wanted to see and the new rules that should be set in place. His actions made people contemplate the churches authority and the practice of selling indulgences. Martin Luther never wanted to cause a split in the Church, however his actions helped divide the community along with other reformers.

Martin Luther’s message along with other reformers help, spread protestant ideas throughout Europe. New churches were rapidly forming and Christians were turning away from their Faith. The Church was angry about this and tried their very best to hunt down any heretics. This movement was called the inquisition. They tortured them back to the Roman catholic faith making it very hard to practice their religion.
Due to his actions, it was decided by Pope Leo X that Martin Luther would be excommunicated from the Church, meaning that he was separated and could not come back to the catholic community. However, he was then protected by a wealthy prince were he stayed and translated the Bible. While he was here, he gained followers and the new protestant church named Lutheran was formed.
As a result of the Protests started by Martin Luther, theChurch finally started to reform and change their corrupt ways. This was discussed at a crucial meeting called the Counsel of Trent. Some things that were discussed were the removal of indulgences, stricter rules regarding priests and overall moving closer to scripture. Therefore, bringing people closer as well.
