Tim O'Brien and his platoon of soldiers decide to spend the night in a field off of the bank of the Song Tra Bong river, during this time of year the river floods the low lying fields surrounding the area resulting in the mud essentially turning into quicksand making it hard for the soldiers to move.
Tim decides to pull out his flashlight in order to show Kiowa a picture of his girlfriend Billie who was back at home.
The glare given of by the flashlight alerted the enemy of their position, and chaos then ensued as they were bombarded with mortar fire.
Between the mortar fire the gunshot, flares the smell of the field and the rain, Kiowa went unnoticed and began to sink under the quicksand like mud. Tim was unable to save him.
The next day as the soldiers frantically searched for Kiowa's remains Tim was looking for his photo of Billie as it was the photo that killed Kiowa. If Tim didn't pull out his flashlight to show Kiowa the photo the of his Ex girlfriend back at home Kiowa still would've been alive. That is why its important for Tim to find his photo.
Even long after the war the sense of quilt that Tim carries for Kiowas death is immense and is something that he will have to carry with him for the rest of his life.
