  • "The instruments of darkness tell us truths, win us with honest trifles, to betray's in deeper consequence. - Cousins, a word, I pray you" (Scene 3; 144-147).
  • "Present feelings are less than horrible imaginings. My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, shakes so my single state of man is smothered" (Scene 3; 158- 162).
  • Duncan explains to Ross and Angus that he is giving Macbeth the title of Thane of Cawdor as an award for his success in battle.
  • "Alone, he begins to have second thoughts about his murderous plans"
  • The three witches told Banquo (right) and Macbeth (left) about Macbeth's prophecy of becoming king, and although they were stunned, Banquo warned Macbeth about the suspicions of the witches.
  • "They letters have transported me beyond this ignorant present, and i feel now the future in the instant" (Scene 5; 63-65).
  • After Duncan tells Macbeth the news, which then confirms the witches' prophecy for him, he begins to have an internal conflict and evil intentions of terminating Duncan. 
  • As soon as Macbeth is aware of his internal conflict, he immediately dismisses it and becomes very excited about his new position.
  • Lady Macbeth finds a letter that explains Macbeth's situation. Reading it, she immediately becomes power-hungry and eager to create a plan for Macbeth to be king. Her plan involves murdering Duncan.
  • Duncan and Banquo go to the Macbeth castle to celebrate the news. While Lady Macbeth is ready to execute the murder plan, Macbeth is the one to have doubts. She orders him to act as innocent as possible.
