Ruthie broke up with two boyfriends who loved her. She became engaged and married Steve Barnes the summer we graduated from high school. I saw Buster at Kroger's. He said, "Ruthie won't speak my name." I didn't disagree with him. Her wedding was beautiful. I was a bridesmaid. I kept saying to Ruthie, "You don't have to do this." I helped her change into her blue suit. By this time we were both too exhausted to cry. She practiced waves that showed off her figure the best. When she left I sat on the sidewalk in my Bridesmaid dress and eventually went to the Bluegrass Inn - still in my Bridesmaid dress. It was the first time I heard the song, "Salty Dawg".
I got drunk on beer and let a boy named Mike kiss me. I kept thinking, "This is Ruthie's wedding night." i told this Mike, "I don't want to ever see you again." The next time I saw him was 30 years later at our class reunion.
Remember me? You said you never wanted to see me again. Ha! Ha!
I remember.
How come nobody looked for Ruthie?
I couldn't believe no one had heard from Ruthie. I heard Buster didn't come to the reunion because he was afraid Ruthie would be there.
Where's Ruthie???
Has anyone heard from Ruthie???
This was 2004 and I wrote most of the lyrics when I got home from the reunion. I sat outside and drank Brandy, found chords I thought would work.
Today, I would love to see Ruthie, but I would be afraid that we wouldn't know what else to do but make small talk. I would never want to make small talk with Ruthie.
I can't help myself from wondering, when it's all been said and done. How come nobody's looking for Ruthie. I keep wondering about Ruthie.
