- For the constitution compromise, the south wanted their slaves to count toward the states population so they would have more representation.
- The north feared that if this happened it would give the south too much power in the house of representatives, and also believed they paid more in taxes.
- The north and south worked out a compromise where ever 3 out of 5 slaves counted toward a states population (the 3/5th compromise).
