Priestley did a series of experiment to identify what role did air made to grow plants. He put a candle that was burning fiercely and a mouse in an enclosed jar. Not long after the candle was turned off and the mouse died. He then observed that a burning candle and a mouse change the composition of the air.
Let's make an experiment.
He then put a plant, burning candle and a mouse in an enclosed jar. He found out that the mouse was alive, the candle was still lit. He conjectured that the plant produces gas that support the candle and the mouse to live.

On 1, August, 1774, after his 2 experiment, he replaced the plant with mercuric oxide and continued the experiment with same condition. He focused the sunlight on the oxide using a lens. The oxide burned and released a gas that made the candles flames to burn more fiercely and kept the mouse live four times longer. He called the experiment dephlogisticated air.
