Ezekiel a runaway slave who convinces Lyddie in a indirect way to be a free person so she decides that she will be free working in a factory. Lyddie is making a big decision whether to quit her current job, working at the tavern.
When Lyddie had her first full day of working at the factory, the day was very tiring and she got physically hurt because of the conditions of the factory.The working conditions at the factory weren't good and many of the girls get hurt. Society has made it hard for her to work there.
Mistress Cutler fires Lyddie because she went home without permission. She fires Lyddie at the Cutler's tavern as soon as Lyddie comes back but Lyddie doesn’t care because she has made up her mind about working in the factories in Lowell. Lyddie is having a conflict with the Mistress because she lost her job because of her but Lyddie doesn’t care because she knows what she is going to do.
