Dumbledore informs McGonagall that Voldemort murdered Harry Potter's parents the night before and attempted to murder their son, Harry, but was unsuccessful. Dumbledore takes Harry and puts him on the Dursleys' doorstep, accompanied by an explanation letter he has sent to them.
Harry is intrigued by a boa constrictor and is surprised when he is able to communicate with it. While conversing with the boa, Harry managed to break the bottle, causing Dudley to fall into the pit of the boa.
Harry is “incarcerated” in his cupboard until the summer as a punishment for the boa constrictor incident. When he is eventually set free, he spends the majority of his time outside his home, trying to avoid Dudley's thugs. Harry tries to get the letter that has started appearing outside his house, but Uncle Vernon refuses to give it to him.
