Hi! My name is Pranitha Sayam and my passion is in the arts. Ever since I was a kid growing up, I was always naturally gifted in most mediums of art, and people would always compliment my precise hand, saying I should become a surgeon! But no, I knew that fashion was what I wanted to pursue. Fashion is so important in culture, especially my Indian culture, and it's a way for me to express myself and where I come from.
Why do I want to go into fashion? Being born an Indian in America it always made sense to chase a future related to engineering or medicine. In these last years I realised I was chasing something that would ultimately make me unhappy and I was doing it to please others. I was able to finally accept that art is who I really am and being creative is what I strive in. So many Asians fail to remember how artistic their ancestors are and it's up to artists/designers of the next generation to keep their work alive.
Sometimes when I tell someone that I want to pursue fashion in New York, its always mixed reactions. However, I'm aware that the path I'm taking is an unorthodox one, but I want to show people that it's okay to study arts and do something they are passionate about. Many kids today force themselves to do something for the money, but I am a firm believer that if you truly love what you do, money will follow.
There are so many things I want to learn as I dive into the world of fashion! During my visits to India, I was so fascinated by the work it takes to make a saree. I hope to learn more about the handloom that weaves the saree and hopefully I too will use one in the future! I also want to learn about different prints, patterns, and textiles!
Pranitha, If you had 10 weeks to do anything, what would you do?
That's easy! First I would go to India. Why? Because India is filled with amazing men and women who do artwork specialised to their region. Then I would work with them and get inspiration from these artists to create a fashion line that not only represents me, but the unrepresented artists in India. Finally, I would give my proceeds to them because my goal is to support them. In the end, I want to give importance to the artists in India through my work in fashion!
Thank You GripTape for giving me this opportunity to share my passion!
