It wasn't until 1862, when the Homestead Act was signed into law. This allowed my family to get 160 acres of land for free, as long as we ,oved to the west for five years.
We can finally have some progress on the farm!!
Moving to the west isn't as bad as you would think. We were able to use the transcontinental rail road to move our cattle and crops easily. And once we moved into out new Sod house, we were able to put the cattle and crops behind a barbed wire.
I have tried communicating with them but they just see us at cattle to be moved!! We need to do something.
More and more people are coming and stealing out land for there own. Wat do we do??!
Some of the down sides to living in the west was the lack of rain and the reality of being isolated for most of the time.
Although it was hard to grow crops in the west, my family was able to use the ground water wells and windmills to get access to ground water. We were also able to use steel plows to make up for man power on the farm lands.
One of the main effects of the settlement was the closing of the open range. Father says that because of the increase of crops and cattle, morepeople wanted to move to the west.Slide 7: Another effect of moving her was the cause of the Indian War. Like is aid before, this land was first founded by the natives. When we moved here it seems to have angered the natives and has caused fights between settlersand natives. My dad says that this war can last up to 20 years.
