A group who called themselves federalists, favored ratification. They were all usually farmers, merchants, or lawyers who supported a strong government.
We`re the federalists, we like to ratify things.
I support a strong government!
Another issue in the Ratification Struggle was individual rights, unlike many state constitutions, the U.S. Constitution did not contain a Bill of Rights. The lack of a bill of rights, outraged the Antifederalists.
OH NO!
We need individual rights, I`m mad!
The other group, called Antifederalists, feared a strong national government and refuse to support ratification. They claim that a powerful government would destroy the states` rights.
We the antifederalists oppose the idea of a strong government.
squeak
We`ll ratify the constitution, only if we are guaranteed individual rights
Several states, including Virginia and New York, agreed to ratify the Constitution only if individual rights were guaranteed. Soon, enough states had ratified the constitution for it to take effect.
New York Federalists threatened to withdraw New York City from the state if it did not ratify the constitution. In the end, both states ratified the constitution by a very narrow margin.
We`re leaving you sorry bastards
To hell with you!
Rhode Island was the final state to ratify, which had refused to send delegates to the Constitutional Convention. The state threatened with an economical boycott by Congress, finally a convention was called and ratification was narrowly approved.
Finally, the ratification has been approved....narrowly
