They had coastal plains along the coastline, rolling hills in the middle, and mountains farther inland. They had good coastal harbors for shipping/trading, along with a convenient central location.

This was due to the Quakers' beliefs, because William Penn, the creator of the colony, wanted religious freedom and a peaceful refuge for all religions. In the colonies, you trade with your neighbors for things. People worked in craftsmanship, farming, trading, and bread-making.
