  • Up until 1776, when the U.S announced its independence from Great Britain, the Italian peninsula existed as a politically fragmented conglomeration ofstates.
  • UNIFICATION OF ITALY
  • After Napoleon’s rise to power, the Italian peninsula was conquered by the French. Under Napoleon, the peninsula was divided into three entities: the northern parts which were annexed to the French Empire, the newly created Kingdom of Italy ruled by Napoleon himself, and the Kingdom of Naples.
  • I am willing to incorporate the French ideals of equality and freedom among the Italian citizens as well.

  • After Napoleon's downfall in 1814, many of the Italian states brought together by him were once more broken down and divided and taken over by the Austrians and the Bourbon empire. They were filled with conservatives of the old social order.
  • However, eventually the idea of nationalism and a united Italy began to take root throughout the peninsula.
  • I am against any changes in the social order. I will not follow the new policies.
  • Yes. All our past customs and principles must be followed.
