The unnamed speaker receives a letter from an old friend, Usher. The letter explained that Usher was very ill and he wanted to see the u.s.. As the u.s.. is waiting outside he looks at a lake surrounding the house and is led to believe that the house is abnormal and it makes him feel off.

The u.s. enters the home and finds his old friend, Usher. The u.s. feels uneasy as he notices the furniture and decor inside the house. Usher explains how sick he is and his symptoms. He also reveals that his sister, Lady Madeline, is ill as well.
After a few days of comforting Usher, Lady Madeline dies. Her body is later taken under the mansion.
About a week later, Usher and the u.s. decide to keep themselves busy. Usher keeps himself busy by working on artistic projects. Usher sings a ballad and it is a metaphor for his insanity.
Usher breaks in to the unnamed speaker's room and believes the thunderstorm outside was threatening and becomes afraid of the natural occurrence. In order to calm down Usher, the u.s. reads Usher a story which coincidentally manifests Lady Madeline from the dead to appear in the bedroom; Lady Madeline kills Usher as she throws herself onto him.
The house cracks into two pieces and falls into the lake underneath. The Usher family line is gone. The U.S. escapes and reflects back on the house.
