  • When he was 11, he was taught to play by ear the Dago Tony's honky tonk by the Cornetist Bunk Johnson who was also an African American that played Jazz. He was good at playing the cornet and the trumpet and was also really good at scat singing. It gave him something to live for.
  • Armstrong developed his cornet skills by playing in a band. “ Peter Davis, who frequently appeared at the home at the request of Captain Jones, became Armstrong's first teacher and chose him as the bandleader. ” With the band, thirteen-year-old Armstrong managed to attract Kid Ory. Kid Ory plays a central element of New Orleans jazz. This factor inspired Armstong to his Jazz path.
  • As he studied in a community college for shipping management at the local community college, he was forced to quit because of the unaffordable fees. While he was selling coal in Storyville, he heard that groups and bands played. He also heard the early sounds of Jazz from bands that played in dance halls such as Pete Lala's, where King Oliver performed.
