- In darkness, chaos rose as water swirled violently. From Nun or total chaos, rose Ben-Ben, an island in the midst of raging water. Alone on the island stood the mighty god Atum.
- He was filled with loneliness because of the void he witnessed. Atum joined with his shadow to create and give birth to two children. The male, Shu, became the air god, while the the female, Tefnet, gained the role of the goddess of water.
- The two children ventured into the chaos that lay all around them. Troubled by their departure, Atum detached his eye on a quest to locate them. A joyful reunion brought joyful tears to Atum. As these tears fell down on Ben-Ben, they became people, both men and women.
