Hi parents! Thank you for coming to the Sensory Board Session. Today we will discuss the items that should be included on a sensory board for toddlers. Let's get started!
Sensory Boards are all about problem solving and using these three senses: sight, touch, and sound. Let's begin with sight. Does anyone know of an item that would be pleasing to the eye for your little one?
Our toddler loves color! I think numbers or letters with color would be great for our son.
Absolutely! Children love color, so I think that would be great for a sensory board.
I go to the hardware store all the time and see free samples of carpet. I bet that would be fun to a toddler to compare to a patch of felt! Plus, it's free!
Next let's talk about incorporating touch within the sensory board. It is important to give a variety of textures for your child to manipulate and compare to one another. An example would be a patch of felt. Can you think of what type of texture your child might be interest in?
Excellent! Our sensory board is coming along nicely!
I have empty pill bottles that I could fill with sugar, rice, beans, or even coins! I could find all of those things around the house. And, I love that the pill bottle has the children's safety lock.
Now for the last of the senses: sound. There are many objects that are toddler friendly that make sounds. For example, a rain maker is a toddler friendly toy used with objects around the house. All you need is a toilet paper roll, rice, and foil. Can you think of objects to put together to make a sound for your toddler?
Wow! Great thinking! It is great to find objects that you already have to save money.
Let's discuss some examples of problem solving tools: door locks, light switches, henges, and door handles.
Wow! I think I will pick those tools up when I'm getting the carpet samples!
Going through the human senses will help you discover objects that will best fit your toddler sensory board. You all have come up with great ideas so far. One other topic I want you to keep in mind is problem solving. As parents, we want our children to solve problems on their own, so let's discuss what type of tools we could add to the sensory board that could involve problem solving.
Thank you for the information!
We covered lots of ground today. I encourage you to look around your house for items that could relate to our senses before buying anything. I hope your little ones loves the final product! Have a great day!
