  • The ghost of Old Hamlet
  • Claudius and Gertrude
  • Ophelia
  • Horacio, Bernardo and Marcelo take over the night watch. A spectre, very similar to Hamlet's recently deceased father, appears for the second night in a row, but disappears again without answering Horatio. Horatio decides to seek out Hamlet to inform him of the apparition.
  • Queen Gertrude has taken Claudius as her husband and Claudius thanks everyone for their agreement to the marriage. He announces that Fontinbras claims from Claudius the lands lost by his uncle and decides to send Cornelius and Voltemand with a letter to the new Norwegian king. Polonius' son Laertes asks the king for permission to return to France after the coronation. As Hamlet mourns his father's death, Horatio, Bernard and Marcellus enter and tell him of the apparition of the spectre. Hamlet asks them to keep it a secret.
  • Before leaving for France, Laertes warns his sister Ophelia against courting Hamlet, as she may not be able to keep her promise to marry. Polonius enters and gives Laertes advice on how to behave abroad. As he leaves, father and daughter discuss Hamlet's love affairs. Polonius asks her not to believe his promises and to stay away from him.
  • A Warning
  • Horacio and Marcelo do the night watch along with Hamlet. Hamlet is shocked by the noise of celebrations. The specter appears, calls Hamlet and Hamlet follows him. Horatio and Marcellus try to stop him without success.
  • Hamlet follows the specter. Alone with him, the specter reveals his identity and discovers that the official version of his death is false: after committing adultery with Queen Gertrude, Claudius found him sleeping in the garden and poured poison in his ear. He asks him to avenge his murder, but not to act against his mother, who will have enough with her remorse. Horatio and Marcellus enter, but Hamlet answers their questions evasively. He only asks them to swear an oath to keep silent about the apparition.
