  • I did an experiment with two wires that were close together and parallel to each other. When an electric current flowed through them in the same direction the wires were attracted to each other. When the current flowed in opposite directions the wires repelled each other.
  • André-Marie Ampère is a French physicist who founded and named the science of electrodynamics, now known as electromagnetism. His name endures in everyday life in the ampere, the unit for measuring electric current.
  • Michael Faraday FRS was an English scientist who contributed to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His main discoveries include the principles underlying electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis.
  • I experimented by wrapping two insulated coils of wire around an iron ring. I found that, upon passing a current through one coil, a momentary current was induced in the other coil— mutual induction. If I moved magnet through a loop of wire, an electric current flowed in that wire.
  • I am James Clerk Maxwell. I began my work in electromagnetism by extending Michael Faraday's theories of electricity and magnetic lines of force. I then began to see the connections between the approaches of Faraday, Reimann and Gauss. As result, I was able to derive one of the most elegant theories yet formulated.
  • I am Heinrich Hertz. I proved the existence of radio waves in the late 1880s. I used a spark gap attached to an induction coil and separate spark gap on a receiving antenna. When waves created by the sparks of the coil transmitter were picked up by the receiving antenna, sparks would jumpits gap as well.
