Odysseus takes off his rags off and gets a bow and arrow ready. After praying to Apollo to ensure that all his arrows hit their target he shoots an arrow. The airborne arrow heads straight towards Antinoos's throat, ensuring his death.
Odysseus shooting an arrow in Antinoos's throat enrages and scares many men, they were not aware that Odysseus intended to kill anyone. Odysseus reveals who he is and how he plans on killing the suitors and avenging those who they have troubled. Eurymachos tries to ask for mercy but after that fails he tells the scared men to fight.
WIth the assistance of Telemachus and a few other men, Odysseus defeats all the suitors after a series of battles, while also sparing a couple who were loyal to Odysseus. Odysseus orders a nurse to bring the disgraceful women and clean up all the bodies with the help of Telemachus, then to hang all the disgraceful women.
The nurse then tells Penelope, Odysseus's wife, how Odysseus has returned and killed all the suitors. Too cautious to believe this, Penelope tells the nurse that she has gone mad and almost goes as far as to send her off. The nurse tells her that even Telemachus knew Odysseus was present and Penelope believes her in joy and goes to see him.
Penelope is confused when she confronts Odysseus, she does not recognize him in his dirty rags after 20 years. Telemachus insults her for having such a cold heart but Odysseus tells him to leave her alone. Penelope then says how Odysseus and herself share many secrets that will help her confirm Odysseus's identity.
After taking a bath and getting fresh new clothes Odysseus looks more like a god than a man. Odysseus tells a secret about his bed and how it is made out of an olive tree. Penelope can no longer stand it and bursts into tears, hugging and kissing Odysseus.
