  • The Canon's Yeoman's Tale is the 14th story in the Canterbury Tales.

  • A Canon approaches a Priest and asks him for gold. The Priest obliges and within three days the Canon returns to pay him back. The Priest is happy with this and then the Canon promises to show him some of his craft
  • Falling Action/Resolution
  • At the Canon's request, the Priest's servant brings quicksilver and coals and later some water and chalk. After a while, the Canon had created a ingot from silver fillings that came from a fake coal he had brought with him. They even did it a few more times to make sure the Priest had the process down, all while he was unaware of deception.
  • Lesson
  • The two then take the three silver ingots to the goldsmith to check for their purity only to find that they were indeed made of pure silver. The Priest was very excited about this and begged for the Canon to tell him recipe.
  • The Canon gave the Priest the recipe at a cost of 40 pounds, yet this recipe even still was littered with deception. The two then departed, the Priest never seeing the Canon again.
  • The moral of this story is that things aren't as always as they seem...
