The colour purple is used to symbolize sorrow and suffering. Purple is also the colour of wealth, power, and royalty as the purple dye was very expensive in older times. In the church we use purple for Advent and Lent, the season we are currently in.
To mark Jesus Christ's 40 days in the desert people give up something they want to stop doing such as smoking or drinking or they give up something like TV or chocolate. This is called Lent.
During Advent, people prepare for the anniversary of the birth of Jesus [Christmas]. They do this by making an advent wreath, hanging up lights and decorations, putting up a Christmas tree, buying an advent calendar, and lighting 5 candles, one for every Sunday in Advent. Three of these candles are purple one is pink and the fifth white.
