  • The Monsters Are due on Maple Street Them: Mankind is its worst enemy
  • In The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street by Rod Serling one of the main themes is that mankind is its worst enemy and here is why it is. For starters near the beginning of the story ( Page 670-674) its shown that all the lights have gone out in the street which a kid named Tommy claimed to be aliens doing, but soon we see Mr. Goodman trying to get his car started but when he gives up the car all of a sudden starts making everyone believe the boy and thinks Goodman is a traitor. This proves my claim because they all began to turn on him due to being nervous and now worried do to what the boy said. Next off we in the story in act 2 (Page 678) we see Charlie and Steve arguing amongst each other, with Charlie mentioning a radio in his house which Steve's wife claims to just be a simple ham radio and later when Charlie wont stop accusing he claims that they all will just point fingers at each other all day trying to find a scapegoat and will eat each other up alive. This yet again proves my point as its even claims my theme in the story itself but let me move on. Lastly at the very end of the story in act 2 on page 683-684 its shown that aliens from a distance watching and observing saying that that there is a pattern and how all they need to do is turn off a few of there lights, cars, and devices and they will all turn against each other due to fear. This proves my point as its shown that there whole plan was to turn the humans against themselves to pick each other off one by one further proving that the theme is mankind is its worst enemy.
