- Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria, where his father Leopold was a violinist and composer.
- Leopold, was a successful composer, violinist, and assistant concert master at the Salzburg court. With their father’s encouragement and guidance, both Wolfgang and his sister Nannerl were introduced to music at an early age.
- Leopold started Nannerl on keyboard when she was seven, as three-year old Wolfgang looked on.
- Mimicking her playing, Wolfgang quickly began to show a strong understanding of chords, tonality, and tempo. Soon, he too was being tutored by his father.
- Leopold devoted much of his time to their education in music. He and his older sister, were musical prodigies, and he started composing at the age of five, giving his first public appearance.
- Wolfgang soon showed signs of excelling beyond his father’s teachings. He had his first piece published when he was seven and he wrote his first opera when he was twelve. By the time Wolfgang was 6, he was an excellent pianist and violinist.
