Queen Liliuokalani, was crowned the queen of Hawaii, in 1980, while Hawaii was still its own Monarchy
As the ruler of Hawaii, the queen was a strong nationalist and had great pride in her country, and put her country first.

At the time America had interests in Hawaii, because of it's major sugar cane profit, and to keep other european powers out of the monarchy.

Eventually, progressive president, Taft placed higher taxes and terifs on sugar from Hawaii.
In response to this, the queen took power from the American sugar planters who lived in Hawaii. Doing this she believed she'd gain more control over Hawaii's economy and polotics.
Soon after, a group of men came together, in efforts to overthrow the queen. The group consistsed of American soldiers, famers and buisnessmen.
In 1893, The Hawaii Revolution, led by Samuel B. Dole, sucssefully de-throwned the queen. Soon after Hawaii became an independant Republic, with Dole as its president
